Sting Ray and the MWSRP team up
25th April 2010
The partnership began in South Ari where Deko, Sam, Chubby and the rest of the Sting Ray crew collected the MWSRP team members and headed off on their cruise track through Ari Atoll, Rasdhoo and back to Male.
It was a great opportunity for both parties to exchange knowledge of the whale sharks and the habitat in South Ari - the Sting Ray crew certainly know their stuff regarding tides, currents and marine life.
The time onboard allowed the MWSRP to provide the crew with whale shark biology and behaviour information and to re-iterate how rare these fish may become in the not so distant future - the whale shark is categorisation by the IUCN as ‘Vulnerable to Extinction'.
Research techniques and results were discussed and the MWSRP hopes that the Sting Ray crew will continue to become more involved in whale shark research and conservation in the Maldives.
The partnership proved an invaluable experience to the MWSRP team who are excited about the prospects of a longer term partnership.
