The Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme (MWSRP) (http://www.mwsrp.org/), as its name suggests, study whale sharks in the Republic of Maldives. However, that aspect of their work is merely the tip of the iceberg.

Brussels 15.12.09: The Shark Alliance applauds the EU Council of Fisheries Ministers’ decision to end all fishing for porbeagle sharks and reduce by 90% fishing quotas for spurdog, in line with scientific advice and proposals from the European Commission.

The MWSRP team's first two and a half days on the reef prove to be very sharky.

Two sharks were encountered on the 10th December afternoon, six the following day and six on the 12th December also.

Nov 17 MWSRP's Scientific Advisor, Giuseppe Notarbartolo di Sciara, receives knighthood in the Order of Saint-Charles

On 17 November Tethys' founder and honorary president, Giuseppe Notarbartolo di Sciara, received a knighthood in the Order of Saint-Charles by H.S.H. the Prince Albert II of Monaco, for services rendered to the Principality in his quality of Chair of the Scientific Committee of ACCOBAMS.

The team will be back in South Ari on the 10^th December 2009 to continue the MWSRP's pioneering whale shark research. Also high on the priority list is the development of the new FenMaaDhiguRan Marine Protected Area (MPA).

FenMaaDhiguRan (English translation - Water Flower Long Sun) - Announced on June 5^th 2009 by the Maldivian Government is the largest Marine Protected Area (MPA) in the Maldives. It finds its home at the southern tip of the South Ari Atoll, Republic of Maldives, home to some of the most superb dive sites in the World and a globally significant whale shark aggregation. The area is forty two square kilometres of coral reef and turquoise waters bordered by idyllic palm fringed, white sand islands.
Oct 13 UK Acts to End Shark Finning

The Shark Trust marks European Shark Week 2009 by heralding a UK decision to lead in the battle against shark "finning" (slicing off a shark's fins and discarding the body at sea) with a complete ban on removal of shark fins at sea. The Shark Trust, a founding member of the Shark Alliance, has campaigned against finning and for this groundbreaking policy for years.
