Bali, Indonesia: MWSRP has joined more than 65 conservation, marine science, diving and sport fishing groups from around the world to urge the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) to reject European Union (EU) and Australian proposals that could weaken the regional ban on shark finning, the wasteful practice of cutting off a shark’s valuable fins and discarding the body at sea.
Gaia Vince, a journalist working for the BBC, questioned the new President, on behalf of the MWSRP, about plans for an International port at Maamigili. A 15 inch (38 centimeters) long whale shark has been rescued by conservation officers in the Philippines.
It was found with a rope tied around its tail, secured to a stick poked in the sand in a coastal town near Donsol in Sorsogon province
